Merry Christmas - Red Velvet Cake

For past couple of days I had been running like a headless chicken... I hear "yeah me too" from you all....Well reason was mum arrived on Sunday and she is going to staying with me for three months "Happy Dance". I was in rush to clear the chaos, attending Christmas parties, organising my unorganised schedule and climate being super cold here, I had to take some extra efforts for mum's warm cloths (it's going to reach -30 this weekend). Thought I packed mum with warmers, snow storm horrified her! She ended up saying when will I go back to India? on the day she arrived :O. And since I didn't want her to rush back immediately to India, took a day off saying working from home, to give her some company and make her feel better but ended up making red velvet cake ...mum cleared up the whole kitchen mess! Lucky me isn't it? :)) You see I was actually working! (My boss doesn't know I have a food blog )...ha ha

Anyways, Red velvet cake was in my do list for many months, finally it got chance for this Christmas. Being honest it wasn't red but brick red velvet cake, but the texture, flavor was awesome. Mum loved it, I know mum's are biased to daughters......I handed half cake to my Finnish God Mother and she asked for the recipe ..big yay! so I'm basically not bothered about the color failure...

Here is my Santa Clause with some gift and a piece of brick red velvet cake wishing you Merry Christmas. Have a peaceful and fun Christmas with your Family and friends..Greeting from Finland :)

PS: I did fondant flowers by myself, learned from this video. Made white flowers and painted with red food color!

I followed this recipe to the dot......I strongly recommend it :) have fun guys!

Hi Ananda, We had b/w -25 and -35 for 4 days last week - all the melted snow turned to ice on the roads and the winds were bone chilling!! Your Mum is really brave for visiting you in Finland in winter - hope she will relax and enjoy the beautiful country!! Cake looks lovely - was due to make it last weekend - try and do it for X'mas or new year's now!!

Soma December 23, 2010 at 1:09 AM

How fortunate you are to have your mum with you. Wishing you all the lovely times.

The cake is stunning!!! I have never dared to bake a velvet cake yet, let along decorating it so pretty.

Merry Christmas and Happy New to you and all your dear ones.

Sarah-Jane - SiliconeMoulds.com December 23, 2010 at 1:26 AM

nice photos as always Ananda.

Wow -30 ? That's far too cold for me ! It was -8 here night before last. Plenty cold enough for me.

Must be a massive shock for your mum. I hope you hsve plenty of warm things for her for CHristmas !

Love the roses. The video is super. As discussing yesterday, I made some with playdoh. I'll need to download the photos from my camera so you can see. I'm sure the results will be far better with sugarpaste and I hope to try it soon

Merry Christmas

Yay I'm the first to leave a comment! Ok I know that's kinda lame, but everyone else normally beats me to it. Gorgeous cake! And you always take such care and precision with the presentation of your food and taking photos. It's real class. And those fondant flowers, I would've thought they were store-bought!

I marvel at your artistic ability, both with food and photography and love even more the simple honesty your posts convey. I know Indian parents feel so home sick in the very ordered, clean and silent western world, they can't wait to get back to the chaotic traffic, sounds, colors and crowds etc, same with my parents too and Oh they can't stand the cold either!
A very Happy 2011 to you and your family.
Sandhya.

Ananda, your cake looks exquisite and just perfect for Christmas. How lovely for you to have your Mum with you right now - hope she is by now beginning to recover from the shock of the cold (though I imagine that coming from India she won't get completely used to it). Very best wishes for the year ahead :-)
